Don't forget they released players only on the provision they didn't join the Dolphins. They fired the first shots.
True, but I think was more about protecting their own interests rather than a personal dig at us/Wayne. It's a cut throat space and I am sure Wayne and the board will/are doing the same.

Protecting their interests = keeping us weak, having to pay overs for good players. That was the game but Wayne overturned the table instead of playing:cool:

According to the Courier Mail. It's behind a paywall so I'll summerise.

13 reasons Broncos and Dolphins hate each other

  1. Wayne Bennett and his history with the Broncos and unfortunate sacking.

  2. On-field bad blood stemming from the first Battle for Brisbane. (Don't agree with this. It was just a good, hard game.)

  3. Dobbers. Broncos accused the Dolphins of attempting to coax two of their best young players in Karl Oloapu and Deine Mariner out of contracts.

  4. Oloapu block play. Broncos made sure Oloapu, a Redcliffe Jnr could join anyone but the Dolphins.

  5. Benny v Kevvie (Don't agree with this either. Why would there be bad blood between the two?)

  6. Initial surge in former Broncos players joining the Dolphins.

  7. Poaching war. Dolphins signed Farnworth and Flegler.

  8. While they came in as the Dolphins to broaden their reach, Brisbane have seemingly been deliberate in putting Wayne Bennett’s team in its place by referring to them as Redcliffe.

  9. Broncos don't like the competition in SE QLD. First the Gold Coast and now the Dolphins.

  10. Ex-Broncos staffers Damien McDowell (COO), Shirley Moro (finance), Trad McLean (media), Tristan Croll (digital) and Katie Croll (events) are in the Dolphins’ front office, while development coach Kurt Richards and academy fitness coach Anthony Wood have joined Bennett’s staff, and David Stagg is spearheading a new Redcliffe-based NRL Academy.

  11. The Dolphins’ membership has raced to 25,000, with around 10,000 of those from the Broncos’ backyard in inner-city Brisbane, sparking a turf war.

  12. Fight spills into Caxton Street. One watering hole on Brisbane’s famed Caxton Street has already shown its colours, and they’re red and white in a deliberate ploy to attract supporters of the NRL’s newest team. The Lord Alfred Hotel has pledged its loyalty to the Dolphins.

I still reckon it's all a bit of a media beat-up - nothing a true rivalry like Souths vs Roosters where there is history and real emotions involved.

Hyping it up a little but no reason we can't have a rivalry like Souths and Sydney. It won't be as old for 100 and a few years at least but no reason it can't be just as heated.

It already doesn't need much hyping. Thanks to point 9 in the above message. We aren't going away. An unstoppable force vs an immoveable object🔥

Dolphins fined $50,000 for illegal dealings with Broncos player Deine Mariner

The Dolphins & player manager at the centre of the poaching scandal involving a Broncos player have broken their silence after the NRL handed down historic sanctions.

Dolphins boss Terry Reader has strongly denied breaking contracting laws after the new franchise was fined $25,000 by the NRL over an anti-tampering scandal involving Broncos centre Deine Mariner. In a bombshell development, Wayne Bennett’s Dolphins have become the first club in NRL history to be hit with a breach notice by the governing body for allegedly breaching the code’s player-contract rules.

League Central slapped the Dolphins with a $50,000 fine - $25,000 of which was suspended - while Mariner’s manager Dixon McIvor incurred a suspended 12-month ban after the Broncos lodged a formal complaint with the NRL. Broncos are adamant Dolphins bosses attempted to induce Mariner to break his existing Brisbane contract and the explosive fallout has ignited a Queensland Book of Feuds with their expansion rivals.

The NRL, finalising a nine-month investigation, ruled the Dolphins failed to supply adequate records in relation to their dealings with Mariner and his agent. It is an unprecedented move by the NRL and a clear warning shot to all 17 clubs that the league will not tolerate either anti-tampering activity, or sloppy bookkeeping in relation to contract negotiations.

Under the NRL’s Playing Contract and Remuneration (PCR) rules, the governing body has the power to request records from clubs of all negotiations. It is a terrible look for the Dolphins, who only joined the NRL this season and came under fire last year for holding talks with Storm star Cameron Munster, prompting Melbourne to lodge a formal complaint.

“The National Rugby League (NRL) today issued the Dolphins with a breach notice following an investigation into the conduct of Dolphins Club Officials and an Accredited Player Agent,” the NRL statement read. “It is alleged that both the Dolphins Club and the Player Agent contravened the NRL Playing Contract and Remuneration Rules (PCR Rules) in dealings concerning Brisbane Broncos player Deine Mariner.

“Specifically, the breach notice alleges a failure by the Club to comply with the record keeping provisions of the PCR Rules. The notice proposes a $50,000 financial penalty (50 per cent suspended) for the Club.

“The show cause notice issued to the Player Agent alleges a failure to comply with the player negotiation provisions of the PCR Rules and the record keeping provisions of the Agents Accreditation Scheme Rules (Scheme Rules) and proposes a 12-month suspension of the Agent’s accreditation should he again breach the Scheme Rules or the PCR Rules in the next 24 months. “Both parties have five business days to respond to the notices.”

Meh, everyone does it. Pay up, move on, and be quieter in you approaches.
Exactly. The club only screwed up by getting caught. Within 5 years, our players under contract who could be making more elsewhere will suddenly be wanting out of their contract.

How many nrl players want out of contracts spontaneously.

0

How many are driven by money

100 percent.

Tapping up, as it’s called, is a major part of recruitment. I’d be more worried if we weren’t doing it.

Pat on the back for us, pay the fine, get the player hopefully. And everyone’s happy.

Exactly. Next time set it up like other clubs do so as not to get caught.

NRL need to take a good look at the expansion system. How do you build a team. Without approaching players it's not like an existing team approached it was a new team building from scratch. Buying off the open market you are left with an uncertain bunch. Especially as the league has dragged it's feet over the contract negotiation making it hard to build a squad without knowing what the budget is

For the next team to come in they need to have a proper selection system in place. We haven't had any favours at all this season. First team fined for this, shocking on field decisions and very VERY dubious panel decisions.

They need to adopt an expansion draft. Every existing team is allowed to protect 25 players leaving a selection 85 players for the new club to choose from.

I see the concept but disagree with the number. 25 protected players is pretty high perhaps 1 per starting position? Otherwise all you get is the bench players available for an expansion team.

The other problem with a draft is what if the players don't want to move to Perth/NZ PNG etc.
