Wayne's the kind of person to not take things like the preseason challenge very seriously. But would still be nice to win.

The good news is that the first trial game is barely a month away. To state the obvious. Off season has gone by fast and compared to other clubs, we have been remarkably stable. Hardly any news at all.

DOLPHINS

Will the Dolphins suffer second-year syndrome?
Wayne Bennett’s troops defied the critics with a creditable first season in the NRL, but now the gloss has worn off the shiny new franchise and no-one will underestimate them in 2024. The Dolphins did remarkably well to win nine games in their rookie campaign, but the pressure is on not to go backwards after a promising entry to the NRL.

Will the dynamic duo deliver?
Tom Flegler and Herbie Farnworth came of age at the Broncos last season, but it will be fascinating to see if they can get better at a club unlikely to challenge for a grand final spot next season. The Dolphins are banking on the muscle of Flegler and class of Farnworth to turn them into a genuine finals contender. They are the big off-season buys and it’s vital they stay fit and on the park.

Has the super coach run out of magic tricks?
For almost 50 years, Wayne Bennett has been a coaching titan, but Father Time catches up with even the champions. The seven-time premiership winner stunned the league with the Dolphins’ performances last season, but the jury is out on whether he can deliver a finals campaign in his Redcliffe swan song. The Dolphins need some Bennett magic dust to orchestrate a top-eight fairytale.

It's hard to say what the minimum wage is because there are a number of different pay rates depending on one's position as a trainee, apprentice, disability, whether one is on location to work or one is sent out to work somewhere and age if one is 20 or under.

Things like that. But for a typical worker on a near minimum wage, after taxes that would not be too far off a full days work. At least half a days work.

are the ones i seen that would make it easily into top grade
I think if we get two good juniors make a splash this year, we'll be ahead of schedule. Normally it would take 3 to 4 years at least to get the pathways up and running smoothly.

KURT DONOGHOE – DOLPHINS, FIVE-EIGHTH

Donoghoe, 22, played eight games last year mostly off the bench but was also used at hooker. He played three games for Fiji Bati in the Pacific Cup last year in the No.6 jumper. While Kodi Nikorima and Isaiya Katoa are in a two-way battle to partner Sean O’Sullivan in the halves for round one, Donoghoe is also a genuine option for Wayne Bennett and can further press his case in Saturday’s trial against the Capras.

I missed this one but shouldn't have. He's not a hooker, that's for sure but might go ok at 5/8.

JACK BOSTOCK – DOLPHINS, WING

Bostock has emerged as a genuine contender for a starting spot on the wing in round one. Bostock has played four NRL games but is vying for a permanent spot in 2024 and a strong showing in the trials series should help him cement a place on the wing ahead of Tesi Nui, who is also vying for the same position.
