What's new

Round 14: Dolphins vs NQ Cowboys

Knowles shifts to the middle as time goes on. I said the same think about Gilbert in pre season and he is doing very well. Knowles is strong and fit and pretty mobile but smaller than the big blokes like molo and flegs. I've noticed our pack in general looks smaller than most teams but our boys always aim up exceptionally well. They handled the rumbling Raiders. We also really know how to fit a ball playing 13 into our attack and plathy and donga have the best of that.

That being said Kuli and Conn's, but especially Kuli, are pretty big. Kuli especially when he runs the ball looks colossal.
With the new rules speeding up the game, the smaller props seem to be doing very well.

it cracks me up people thought few of our guys like the two toms wouldnt be suited but they prove week in week out they know how to play and i am sure if george comes here next season he will to as morgies picked up the speed well

I must admit, I'm at a loss to anyone who thought Tom Gilbert and Flegler wouldn't make it due to the new rules. Did anyone know about the new rules until the season started? I had doubts after such long injury lay offs for both. Never wrote them off but didn't think Tom Gilbert in particular would play this well. Flegler hasn't been that good. He got picked for Origin on reputation. Though he is getting better. Working back up to full match fitness.

my point been new laws or not they would still done well yes been out for while but they have omproved and were never going go back to form they were straight away with like george coming in after a injury n if he gets cleared he will have game time under him before season out and comes here, woolf n co know wht it takes to get players peaking

If you listen to Gilberts recent origin interview, he admits his early form was poor, and that he was making errors and not up to scratch.

He has worked hard and changed it.

In finance the first rule you learn is "The best indicator of the future is the past". Where Gilbert is concerned, he has been injured for the best part of 2 years, and the start of this year with a full offseason he started poor, even by his own admission.

If that guy is suggesting to you he shouldn't be judged harshly, with a bit of doubt, i'm glad I have him on ignore. Gilbert even by is own admission was poor. However, I am glad he is his own worst critic, and see him more positively considering he is willing to take ownership and work at correcting that. Gilbert seems sincere, where as other media trained players don't believe they are the issue sometimes.

As a Dolphin fan myself I never want to lose a game, so I am a harsh critic, when players turn it around, i'm the first to praise, however when they let the team down I yell the loudest. I wouldn't be any different from any sporting leadership group in a team. I bet Leaders in any good sporting organisation would call out bad performers well before I do, and expect standards to be lifted.

In relation to writing them off, had Gilbert continued that form till the end of the season, I wouldn't have had to write him off, with so many off contract I reckon the club would have written him off well before I did.

Id suggest if anyone in the sports world thinks that comment above is harsh, they arent in the business of winning, and probably arent at the level of competitiveness required to be in the sporting world in the first place.

Check out the competitiveness of guys like Jordan. You don't get to that level accepting losses or bad performance.

With him it seems no criticism is allowed under any circumstances. Doesn't bother me or change my opinion one iota.

It would be very interesting to see a year on year comparrison on the avg player weight across the league to see if it has dropped (as i susupect) since the 6 again.

Yeah, and only he is right - all the time. All good, glad i cant see his posts. Not sure he has worked that out yet.

the fact he has me on block , shows hes the one that has be right

show me a post wheres hes actually changed his mind after somes said something

its his way or highway

I've had the same thought, but specifically I would kill to see the info consolidated per position and on graphs. For example I think fullbacks are shrinking, but wingers and second rowers are getting bigger while props and locks are getting smaller. I reckon centres are staying about the same.

Probably won't be next year until there is a big difference but clubs this clown Vladeys has no hesitation in changing the rules on a whim. Remember the high tackle thing a few years ago? The point is, clubs will be nervous letting their bigger, less mobile players go for fear Vladeys will let the game revert to the slower version of last year.

Fullbacks are getting smaller for sure. I was reading about this a few weeks back.

Its a bit of a shitter for those clubs who are tied down on long contracts with bigger players. you clear your cap space make a signing and then before they even arrive the rules have changed.

I think props are getting smaller. They look more like 13s every year.
Looks like teams are getting smaller across the board. The young, smallish Dragons prop Couchman and his identical twin who started at lock dominated the Broncos pack apart from Haas last week. As has been mentioned a number of times, Gilbert is playing very well as a prop. Haven't seen much of Cotter this year but he's in the Origin team so he must be doing ok and he is the smallest of the lot. I believe under 100kg.

Beat the Cowboys this round and then face an Origin-weakened Roosters the following week, we'll be firmly entrenched in the top 4.

Cotter is a perfect example. I've seen different information about his weight but usually they say 95kg average, but the eye test I reckon he is 95kg absolute max. Billy loves Cotter and just wants him in origin no matter what cause he is a little bulletproof nugget that chases the ball and ball carriers like a wild dog. Punches well above his weight. Go watch the decider from 2024 where he marked Payne Haas and Mitch Barnett, alongside Lindsay Collins in the starting front row. He always plays hard but he aimed up that game along with Capewell and just busted his arse all game. Cotter isn't really scary but I see a bit of ray stone unbreakable in him.

Also decider last year they start the second half with a kick to utoikamanu and Cotter hits him flush. Cotter bounces back into the dirt but big Stefano literally stops on the spot after winding right up, before the other maroon boys bring him down. Some see it as a bit silly but Cotter literally killed the post contact momentum right there 1 on 1.

I hate how defensive stats sometimes glorify players who just wrap up ball carriers for 40 tackles with no actual effect, while Cotter makes plays like that which impact a defensive set, Donoghoe can do that too. Tries to hit hard enough that the ball comes flying out or that the ball carrier is on their back and sore. The other one is how often Cotter and grant wrap up ankles on big blokes and refuse to let go even when their faces are getting stomped on. Stoney loves that too, but it won't get reflected when the stat sheet just says 40 tackles 1 miss. Lot of difference between 40 Haas wrap ups and 40 Cotter smashings.
