So i've decided to make my own thread so we can all laugh at the joke of the RFL.

On top of the previously mentioned Featherstone, Salford and Halifax collapses this last year. Barrow have today put out essentially a collection bucket asking the wider RL community to riase 5k (yes just five thousand) so they can play a 1895 cup game in London)
The 1895 cup is one of the minor cups for lower teams non SL. but barrow cannot afford the travel to London stay overnight and travel back.

Is it a second or 3rd division team?

The game is gone in the uk, union going professional didn’t help the game. It will be back to part time for all the clubs in super league soon , there’s only Leeds can turn a profit due to the hospitality and hotel they have the rest are still running on pie and pea suppers. Bradford got promoted because Salford went broke . Bradford have been broke 4 times and bailed out by the RFl , they get full super league payments while York and toulose get half of that after finishing 1st and second. Nigel wood got the sack from the RFL once and is now top dog again on $400k a year . After making sure his former club ( Bradford) got in super league .

Good on them , they obviously cut there cloth well. I know Featherstone would have spent big chasing super league same as Halifax, my point was Bradford got bailed out plenty of times by RFL but rest get nothing. Bradford went broke paying others and cheating the cap . Featherstone
Where just chasing a dream.

you would think wood would have some brains but nope even says he would listen to clubs lol b/s lol good on you you fat .... don't male promises you cant keep

Thing is Bradford is quite a large town where football is the main game among many. (although bradford city are crap) if the RL team dies bradford is lost and you only have Keighley as an outpost. Manchester was already lost so they were not bothered about Salford. Wigan/Saints/Warrington all would get the same treatment. Back in the day huddersfield got the benefits of sheffield so the town wasn't lost to huddersfield fc.

I like the fact the NRL are on the attack with regards to promotion and expansion. the RFL are basically fighting managed decline and seem happy to just do what they can to slow that decline as much as they can.

I didn't realise it was that bad.

another thing that don't help is media deal could be way better if they actually proved to the media companies its worth while for them putting huge money in but again poorly done

[/ it’s terrible absolutely no money in the game . The tv deal is pocket change compared to aus . Salary cap is $4.2 Aussie dollars. The clubs fund themselves not like here where the NRL fund them. A lot of clubs rent their grounds so struggle to make any game day revenue. Wakefield are turning it around so have HKR , but most are dying a slow death

Is there a solution is or it just that the game isn't very popular?

They still produce somewhat competitive national teams. Been behind Aus for a while and now NZ as well but games are usually competitive.

In the early 90’s the game was flying the GB tours were happening plenty of sponsorships unfortunately from alcohol and cigarette companies, which disappeared with the clampdown on that type of sponsorship. Then Murdoch allegedly had some dirt on a leading figure in uk RL and overnight we signed with super league .The game has gone backwards since the Murdoch money is gone

Essentially its not very popular. its a regional game to the north of England with basically all the teams between liverpool and hull along the M62 motorway. called the M62 corridor. The teams themselves don't want to expand they want to keep it local as such no national papers carry it as its all basically Lancashire and Yorkshire. There is no international game to speak of. Union has the 6 nations every February like clockwork.

Abotu 20 years ago they launched a thing called the summer conference. it was amateur summer rugby that got union players involved. They loved it. the number of teams exploded then its sort of fizzled out it the RFL did nothing to support it. The teams needed all the effort to recruit train players travel get fixtures advertise.

Then there is the old enemy Union. Many union clubs refused to have League played on their grounds. the posh boys have a strangle hold in the south as an example in 1975 there was a world cup game at a ground in Swansea there was no beer on sale as the union club who owned the ground would rather have gone without the money from the bar than allow league fans to enjoy a pint at the game.

About 800m from my house there is a rugby club that for the last 5 years hasn't had a team. the pitch is still there and the posts and the bar but they've not fielded a side. It exists on bar takings and Sunday kids football matches. a womens RL team nearby is a bit nomadic so i suggested they look to hooking up. RL team no home. A home with no team makes sense. the 'rugby club' wouldn't touch them cos its RL.

David Hinchcliffe was an MP in wakefield who wrote a book called rugbys class war. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rugbys-Class-War-Parliamentary-Battles/dp/1903659000 its abotu 26 years old now and looks at the first 100 years of RL in the uk some of it is shocking.

Only not popular as theres no money in it or guys promoting it as a serious. Sport
