It's quite bewildering just how complicit the fans of Melbourne clubs are to the bias the AFL shows to those 4 clubs.
They have to be, otherwise their sport would be just in VIC.
It's like the NRL expansions, mergers etc. The NRL is going to make PNG players cap exempt. Merged teams got a bonus to their salary caps to juggle the amount of teams in Sydney, allowing them to put other teams in other states.
It's the cost of expansion, and market/revenue growth.
The NRL and AFL are boutique games. I know most here won't agree with me. However, if the EPL was screened prime time (i.e. played live at a time Australians were awake) NRL would have a battle on their hands. Merchandising of EPL teams in Australia, at a young age group outweighs any other sport.
Both the NRL and AFL need to grow their revenue base and fast. Cost of living is increasing, and the average NRL player gets paid 150k and they average career is 40 games, its not worth it to play unless you're in the 1%, and when you are you're not getting paid that much (in relation to global sports), to me it's no surprise, youngster don't want to play League, and soccer/football kills all sports under the age of 12.
Unfortunately, soccer/football is run like a lunatic asylum in Australia. And the gold mine that is youth football, is wasted here.
For young kids to play league here its costs a minimal amount. My son paid $50 rego and got a kit back 6 years ago. For me to register him in soccer its $600. And the numbers still dwarf League despite the expense.
