I've always rated Donoghue. Just not as a hooker. Though it would have been nice to have him out there playing hooker today.
Couldn't agree with you more. On the back of that first half, I am sure he would have had a blinder.

Dude, I rate him too. I think he has potential, but I am realistic in that young sports stars need to develop in order to be consistent. And he will be with time.

I reckon it was his type of game too. High tempo second half, his speed out of dummy half may have turned the tide.

If my count is correct there were 4 errors with the play the ball today. Though 2 were very dubious.

I thought it was a 100% legitimate play the ball. What was wrong with it? I know it wasn't conventional with the ball on its belly but nothing in the rules it has to be like that.
Yep, it was 100% fine.

There was 1 on Kerr (I think).

I don't like blaming ref. But Ashley Klein is fucking rubbish. It didn't help us. I think he has a tendency to even up games. As if there was an NRL directive to make games as close as possible because it improves viewer excitement.

It doesn’t help when Stuart pisses and moans every week how hard done they are by the nrl.

So many dubious 6-again calls for them.

Yeah, I don't like bagging the ref, especially on forums.

However, if you listen to the commentary closely when Hammer gets pinged, you'll know exactly how I felt during the game.

V'Landys introduced 6 agains to fix outcomes, help with live betting and make sure the game gets max viewers. The NRL can't compete with AFL for crowds, competent management and promoting the game in the bush but it beats the AFL with week to week TV ratings. The only AFL game that out rates the NRL is the grand final.

The next TV deal is projected to be 3 billion. Which has increased from 900mil in a short period. Revenue from betting companies is massive as well. Game day rev/tickets would be coffee money by comparison.

However, thats just a guess

You're right especially re the coffee money stuff. The only metrics AFL has over NRL is crowds, auskick, administration & they care about regional towns. I was driving in and around the Sturt Hwy region over the last 2 weeks AFL is winning the battle big time and I'm sure it's the same in most inland regions.

The NRL has historically out rated the AFL on pay-tv despite AFL getting the dedicated channel first and NRL out rates AFL on FTA despite AFL having a better FTA presence and 7 promoting AFL better than 9 promoting NRL. Despite all this NRL has got more viewers aside from grand final and always found a way to botch their TV deals.

Shane Richardson said on a recent podcast it's the first time in the codes history the NRL, UK and INT rights all end at the same time this is why some within the game think the NRL should run the entire code.

I don't like 6 agains it leads to massive corruption and outcome fixing.

I have been involved in youth development in my sport. The only sport that drives the grounds roots correctly is AFL.

ALF also squanders huge amounts of money propping up 2 Qld teams and 2 NSW teams.

It's quite bewildering just how complicit the fans of Melbourne clubs are to the bias the AFL shows to those 4 clubs.

They have to be, otherwise their sport would be just in VIC.

It's like the NRL expansions, mergers etc. The NRL is going to make PNG players cap exempt. Merged teams got a bonus to their salary caps to juggle the amount of teams in Sydney, allowing them to put other teams in other states.

It's the cost of expansion, and market/revenue growth.

The NRL and AFL are boutique games. I know most here won't agree with me. However, if the EPL was screened prime time (i.e. played live at a time Australians were awake) NRL would have a battle on their hands. Merchandising of EPL teams in Australia, at a young age group outweighs any other sport.

Both the NRL and AFL need to grow their revenue base and fast. Cost of living is increasing, and the average NRL player gets paid 150k and they average career is 40 games, its not worth it to play unless you're in the 1%, and when you are you're not getting paid that much (in relation to global sports), to me it's no surprise, youngster don't want to play League, and soccer/football kills all sports under the age of 12.

Unfortunately, soccer/football is run like a lunatic asylum in Australia. And the gold mine that is youth football, is wasted here.

For young kids to play league here its costs a minimal amount. My son paid $50 rego and got a kit back 6 years ago. For me to register him in soccer its $600. And the numbers still dwarf League despite the expense.

Welcome to the tinfoil hat corner, NRL conspiracy talk should have its own thread.
