Recruitment and Retention for 2028

This might be nothing but seems a bit strange for Roosters coach to have a long conversation with him rather than just greet.
Herbie Farnworth and Sydney Roosters coach

If all these rumours of them having already signed for the Dragons ans Roosters were true.

They would have been announced. Its now the 4th.

Bostock and Herbie dont seem like dicks. The are doing what each one of us would do, see what they are worth.

They will probably go away and weigh up all pros and cons. Give the Dolphins the final opportunity.

Then go from there.

If the Dolphins want them at the price the market says they are worth. Because thats how an open market economy works, theyll stay.

If the Dolphins arent willing to do that, they may go or stay loyal. Depending on gow close they are, and hiw highly they rate non money factors.

Either way, if you make it so players are bigger then the club as the sum of the whole, youre on the road to being the Tigers.

Sua resigning is good

Hopefully we get Herbie and/or Bostock resigning news soon
The news will be great either way.

Im hopeful if we lose both, we spend it going forward on the prop position, and blood a few youngsters to see where we are at with the likes of Lavender, and maybe Pouniu being eased into the side at centre

TBH, I'm getting a bit frustrated. Herbie in particular isn't playing in the World Cup anymore. One would think he'd have had time to hear what's on offer and make a decision.

It's only been a few days presumably he may be negotiating over a 1.1m vs 1.2m type offer or whatever to stay prior to considering interest elsewhere now that presumably other clubs have shown their numbers

Not Dolphins related directly but Cleary extends with Penrith, with Harrison re-signing at the Titans that means there's only one elite halfback on the market left (Walker) and the rest are all five-eighths in Munster, Burton etc or rookies or bad.

So PNG are gonna have to get Walker or they don't have an elite 7 for their first season but the question is where does he play until then? If it's the Bulldogs it opens up Mitch Woods to change clubs but given his injury issues who knows which clubs will want him. If they can make the cap space obviously he'd fill a huge need for Souths or the Bulldogs if he wants to stay in Sydney (or the Tigers but I doubt they want a one year stopover when not contending)

Also it largely takes the Roosters out of premiership contention for 2027 assuming Walker is released early which would likely move us up to second favourites in the betting markets for 2027 after Penrith and probably makes them a less appealing club for Herbie to go to given he wouldn't be contending immediately for the title and if Rodwell doesn't pan out as a prospect their halves situation is pretty dire, obviously it's fine if he does pan out but it'll take him a few seasons to reach his prime

I assume we'll be seeing a Cleary/Cleary halves combo at Penrith short term, long term will depend whether Jett is good or not.

What do the Roosters do now?

I know they are confident with Rodwell and Savala.

But thats no DCE Walker combo, no matter how you paint it.

And with the rest that are leaving?

Ya he's a solid prospect in his age group it's basically Harrison Woods Rodwell Andrews Black as the halves who played u19s origin back in 2025, so far only Harrison's got a starting role but the others all should be seeing game time this year if they're going to make it in the NRL is imagine especially after Blacks good debut for Canberra and the Roosters halves issues plus presumably Woods gets a shot at the Dogs and Andrews at the tigers if they can stay healthy at some point

The roosters do have money to spend so I assume they get at least one forward to replace Leniu and Crichton and they should be getting at least one outside back too to cover the losses of Tupou and Nawa

Just have to hope that back they get isn't Herbie and he re signs with us which hopefully is the plan from him

I think Rodwell got a couple of games starting at 7 during the Origin period. Though I could be wrong.

Roosters obviously have money to spend now but they already have one of the highest paid centres. Hopefully they conclude having 2 might put the salary cap out of whack, as they say.

Would you want to go there if you were wanting to win something soonish?

There would be doubt for me now

Yeah if the goal is to compete to win premierships the betting odds favs are basically in order

Panthers, Roosters (will drop if Walker leaving for 2027 is confirmed), Dolphins, Storm (lol despite their recruitments absolutely not), Warriors, Souths, Knights, Broncos then a solid drop off

Roosters do need a centre sort of with Toia on the right but Smith on the left is perfectly serviceable, or if they sign a half they have Savala - they more need a winger than a centre but also if Walker is in fact leaving they won't stay 2nd favs for 2026 they'll be more like 5th favs or lower

As it stands their 1-7 by 2028 will look something like

Tedesco (close to ageing out but not quite)
Bassingthwaite/Talau/Pauga/Ramsey
Smith
Toia
Garrick
Savala
Rodwell

Yes, Herbie would allow Smith to play wing and make them a lot better but it's a HUGE drop off from the team that won the comp this year whereas if he stays with us the 1-7 by 2028 presumably looks like

Hammer
Naufahu
Lavender/Bostock
Herbie
Cobbo
Williams/Fineganofo/Donoghoe
Katoa

Plus we're a much better chance to win the comp in 2027 than the Roosters are assuming Walker is in fact leaving

Given Penrith don't need a centre and probably couldn't afford him anyway, I do think Herbie's best chance of winning a comp in the next few seasons is probably staying at the Dolphins now that the Roosters halves situation has imploded and Rodwell is a question mark and Savala is only middle of the road as a starting half.
