NRL powerbrokers are reportedly set to scrap plans to expand into Perth as negotiations with the West Australian government coming to a standstill. That is according to Code Sports, who are reporting the development comes as a fresh blow in the North Sydney Bears’ push for a first grade return.

A Perth Bears franchise was reportedly in line to enter the NRL in 2027, but their expansion bid is reportedly set to fall flat after criticism of WA premier Roger Cook. Cook was reportedly preparing to invest over $300 million in a bid to have a Western Australian NRL franchise, but those plans have come under fire.

Meanwhile, NRL powerbrokers also hold concerns regarding the AFL’s stranglehold on the state, with two teams located there in the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers.

Should expand into the South Pacific islands and NZ first. Places were the competition can get a lot of players. Perth will only be a drain on the talent pool. Those other places will expand the talent pool. Even if the time zone makes Perth desirable for TV.

The moment Easts, Ipswich and Toowoomba get together they'll be an option too good to knock back. Easts have the money and training base ready to go Langlands Park is upgraded now to NRL High Performance Training Level (not NRL games spelling it out clearly for one) and both Ipswich and Toowoomba regions have loads of young kids coming through the systems.

I think they are behind a PNG team and a second NZ team and Perth aren't done and dusted yet. I don't think a 4th SE QLD team should be for 10 years.

The problem with an NZ team is that League is the no.3 football code in Auckland and that's the friendliest League area in NZ.

Perth let into the NRL today.

How long until the Norths side of the "JV" agitate to relocate them to Sydney?

V'Landys has today said he hasn't ruled out the 5th Queensland side.

A few things in the 5th Queensland team favour:

All New Zealand bids don't stack up well financially.

It puts serious doubt about the 20th AFL team going into Queensland to cash in on the new stadium AFL have been given post-Olympics.

Easts Tigers are the richest rugby league club currently not in the NRL.

Western Corridor of Brisbane is the most booming area in NSW/QLD - Ipswich has so much untapped potential just not the money.

Toowoomba is the 2nd largest inland city/town in Australia after Canberra.

If Easts can get Ipswich, Toowoomba and the Granite Belt onside like what Dolphins have done with Norths, Wide Bay and Central Queensland and small parts of Sunshine Coast it'll be a strong force.

Easts have lots of money, good management and an NRL ready HP training facility. Ipswich and Toowoomba areas have the future fan bases, pathways systems that need serious NRL dollars like what Dolphins are pouring into clubs around Moreton Bay & Northern Brisbane and into the Wide Bay, Central Queensland and some parts of Sunshine Coast. The partnerships with Capras and Devils been two of the Dolphins big success stories.

Whilst the Dolphins have under achieved on the field they're 2nd in sponsorship behind the Broncos, they're 4th richest overall behind Roosters (Politis), Broncos & Bulldogs (Pokies) & they have strong TV ratings. V'Landys is only interested in ratings, finances and keeping AFL at arms length.

So many Broncos fans are salty at this making me even more keen to bring them in :)

Is it going to be the Perth Bears, Western Bears of something else?
