‘Felt the bone across my face’: Hooker opens up on horror injury after Dolphins destroy Bulldogs

Kurt Donoghoe’s modelling career may be over, but the Dolphins hooker proved just how tough he is by coming back on 15 minutes after he broke his nose.

A head clash with Toby Sexton looked to have ended his night in the opening moments which would have been a huge blow to a team already without Jeremy Marshall-King and Max Plath.

You needed a protractor to work out what angle his nose was pointing, but it didn’t stop him from returning to the field once he passed his HIA, with Donoghoe penalised for a heavy tackle on Sexton as he put in a kick.

He may have been struggling to breathe, but Donoghoe capped off a brave performance with a try in the final few minutes to help his side crack 40.

“I just remember going hard for a tackle, I reeled out of it, I put my hand on my face and I couldn’t feel my nose,” Donoghoe told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“I felt the bone was across my face. I’ve never broken my nose. I was a bit nervous.

“I just told (the club doctor) to hurry up and put it back in because I didn’t want to wait any longer.

“It went back in pretty well. But I heard a couple of cracks. It was pretty painful.”

Andrew Johns and potentially the entire rugby league world were left cringing on Thursday night when Dolphins utility Kurt Donoghoe suffered a broken nose.

In the early stages of the upset 44-8 win against the Bulldogs, the young hooker was involved in a head clash with opposition halfback.

Play was stopped to allow Donoghoe to receive treatment from the trainer as Johns reacted from the Nine commentary booth.

"There's a head clash here, look at Donoghoe - his nose is bent, this could be his night over," the rugby league Immortal said.

"That nose isn't broken, it's been shattered. Surely he can't go on here, he's in all sorts.

"You've got to take it out of their hands, they will all play on. It's such a tough game."

The 23-year-old eventually budged and left the field in pain, but in an incredible turn of events, passed his head injury assessment and got his nose fixed in order to return.

"I can't believe he's come back on," Johns said.

After the game, Donoghoe admitted he was "out of it" when the incident first occurred.

"It was sideways, but they got it back in thank God," he said.

"I was a bit out of it … it was gone."

The tough Fijian international scored the final try for the Phins to cap off a bizarre night.

Donoghoe wasn't the only player to be forced off for a HIA early in the game, with Canterbury five-eighth Matt Burton deemed as showing category two symptoms.

There were initial concerns for Burton's jaw, but medical staff seemingly cleared him of injury and allowed him to stay on the field before the independent doctor intervened.

When I had Donoghoe in my 17 before the trials started I was the only one and I stood by the Donoghoe prediction. I reckon now all bar one in here would agree Donga has firmly cemented his spot in the 17 and will be there when available for selection. He was badly missed in the losses against Canberra and Roosters.

In today’s era of HIA especially and limited interchanges it’s so valuable for a club to have someone who can cover a wide range of positions.

Met him twice in my whole life and never spoke to him any other time so effectively no. He did play touch footy with & against my electrician & closest mates. He’s a very good player and getting better every year. Dolphins need to extend further as massive offers will come from North Sydney and PNG and Donoghoe off contract end of 2026. He’s valuable for Norths due to playing many positions and positions.
