Gus Gould provided an update on Karl Oloapu at the Bulldogs AGM on Sunday. He's still under contract at the Bulldogs, said the Bulldogs medical reports don't look good for him, gone back home to live with family for the rehab and said the club is in dialogue with the NRL over the roster position. He never mentioned the word they've recommended medical retirement mentioned 100's of words other than that.
Missing out on the entire 2024 NRL season, Canterbury Bulldogs youngster Karl Oloapu has been cleared to make his return next season after undergoing career-threatening spinal surgery.

Before the start of last year's Pacific Championships, it was revealed that Oloapu played through most of the 2023 season in pain and had to undergo neck surgery after suffering neck pains.

The 19-year-old needed cervical fusion surgery after being born with a medical condition that every time he flexed his neck or looked down, it actually pressed on his spinal cord, causing damage.

Pinned as the club's next big thing, Oloapu's injury put a halt on his career, and there was even chatter that he could have been forced into medical retirement.

However, Zero Tackle understands that he has now been cleared to train and is looking to make his NRL return next season in 2025.*

"It's massive. I kind of think everyone forgot about him in a way," teammate Jacob Kiraz told Zero Tackle.

"We all saw every day what he's been doing in rehab behind the scenes, and when he got cleared to play for him and his family at such a young age, that would have been a massive thing, especially when it could be career ending.

"I'm so happy for him and his family. He's a good talent, and people forget he's only 19, so it's crazy."

Rated as one of the best halves throughout his junior years, Oloapu signed with the Brisbane Broncos at the age of 13 before appearing in seven first-grade matches in 2023.

His rookie NRL season came after a controversial off-season move from the Broncos, where the Bulldogs paid big money in a transfer to secure his services until the end of the 2026 NRL season.

Seen as a five-eighth, the rise of Mitchell Woods and the breakout season of Toby Sexton has created chatter that he could transition into a lock forward due to his perfect passing ability and not scared to do the gritty work in defence.

"He's done a really good job – 18 years of age and before he got here, the only football he had really played was at schoolboy level," Phil Gould has said in the past.

"He didn't do the off-season with us and he was blooded before his time a little bit, in a position that he's not going to play long-term. We used him as a halfback there, just to give us a little bit of control, and I thought he did an outstanding job.

"I see him as a lock-forward, very much in the Cameron Murray mould, and I think he's gonna be a really great player for this club for a long time."

hhhmmmmmm.

I smell and salary cap issue
Gus confirmed at the AGM they're currently 700k under the cap. The issue with Canterbury is they have too many on the books and need to trim off some players.

I'm now starting to believe the Dolphins haven't showed much interest in Oloapu for 2025 and certainly not in the Top 30.

The same Gus that told Arthur Laundy not to speak to the media about pubs shares?

Only for no one to ever hear about that again?

It’s pointless me saying anything. As the NRL would prefer those things to disappear rather then have a clean comp.

However, the Bulldogs aren’t on their own. I’d suggest to you, many clubs cheat.

Perception is everything, truth is damning.

The Man City trial in the epl will be interesting.

115 charges of cheating.

We shall see the cost of a governing organisation fighting for a clean comp.

Not sure which way it will go. But the cost of this to the governing body is evidence why the nrl doesn’t go in the offensive in relation to policing the salary cap.

Anyone have any info about what is going on with him? Is he negotiating his payout from the Dogs? Might be getting more significant if Phillip Ronald Gould is lying about his medical condition due to salary cap pressure at the Dogs.

Bulldogs have cooked the Top 30 and Development books due to the talent bristling at the club. They had to upgrade Jack Underhill who was somehow missed by Storm & Dolphins coming from Kawana Waters he's a future Queensland Origin player it's only a matter of time and they've just had to upgrade Jethro Rinakama who's emerged as a star of the future sooner than expected.

Bulldogs are currently 700k under the cap Gus has managed that brilliantly.

I'm sure if Dolphins were serious about Oloapu for 2025 the deal be done now. I have a feeling Dolphins have gone cold about putting him into the Top 30 or Development and Oloapu is on 350k at Bulldogs it's not a simple transaction like it was when Ethan Quai Ward was released from his 2024 contract as he was on around 130-140k.

Bro, I get you're a Bulldogs supporter.

But seriously, you should post this in Bulldogs forums, those fans will lap this shit up.

I'm from Western Sydney, in fact I use to live walking distance from Olympic Park. I know what we are dealing with here.

However, when talking high and mighty about a club that has been caught cheating, suffered a 31-point deduction, and you're trying to tell me there is nothing to see here. You're kidding yourself. A club that came out squeaky clean after Coffs Harbour. Dude, I laugh when people say NRL clubs are run brilliantly, they have a leagues club that fund them through Pokie machine dollars, and a pub tycoon making players pub share offers in the media being told to quieten down by Gus.

The only thing Gus has managed brilliantly is the Pub Tycoon, and a budget double any other club. If he had managed it that brilliantly, he would have won the comp by now, with the advantage he has over any other club in the league.

For the life of me, the Broncos, Bulldogs and Storm should never be missing the finals with the financial advantage they have over everyone else. Id suggest if they miss the finals, the people managing them are morons.

I could manage that club with the computer game like conditions he has.

Amazing they can outbid every other club for "several" big name players and still remain under the cap.

Rest of the squad must be on a minimum wage.

The Kennel forum is famous. Right up there with Broncos HQ for the biggest.

Is it true or just a rumour? Seems very strange Phillip Ronald is trying the medically retire him on social media when he's passed his medical tests.

They don't have a single player over 900k and three players in the 800-900k range.

They signed Leo Thompson for much less than what other clubs offered.
