Melbourne have done that with Christian Welch they found a way to get him paid for the next two years. Wests Tigers now trying it with Justin Olam he will be mysteriously recovered for PNG NRL side. Souths done it previously with Sam Burgess and Greg Inglis.

Whatever the terms of agreement between Phil Gould and Oloapu's manager Matt Adamson have come too will come off the Bulldogs salary cap over the next two years.

Bulldogs are at this point 700k under the cap the problem they have is an excess of players Gus keeps signing and discovering players with complete ease I wish Dolphins had the same ease. Releasing Oloapu gets them to 30 in the Top 30. They can't promote players like Jack Underhill and Jethro Rinakama who are both emerging stars. Rinakama was one of the Bulldogs best in the trials and it's only a matter of time before Underhill is playing State of Origin for Queensland. Gus has got them on deals for 2026 they're not in the Top 30 or Development for 2025.

Dolphins have the same problems with LJ Nonu and Josh Allen they can only keep them at bay outside the 30 and Developement for so long.
Welch was concussed and then got a medial retirement due to a sore knee and/or shoulder.

But no word on whether the NRL has signed off on a salary cap exemption for Melbourne.

One thing I don't disagree with you on is the injury side of things and it appears now the NRL refused the medical retirement hence the agreement for release from contract. I believe he's been moved on because they have too many players signed not a cap issue they just have too many players.

Lets see if the Dolphins were really interested in the first place. Woolf went full on to get Hunt to play 5/8 now he has the chance for Oloapu it's an open slate.
Bulldogs in some trouble. With salary cap and with team judging by the Brisbane game. Looked unfit, slow, lacking creativity. Did they have someone who is going to come into that team and turn it around? Or maybe the Broncos are just going to be that good this year.

Talks should move forward quickly now. Expect the Bulldogs to pay out ALL of his salary and ALL of it to be registered under the Bulldogs cap. Word is he and his family are furious about Phil Gould's slander about him needing to be medically retired.

If it's true, and I suspect it is, NRL needs to penalise the club, coach and GM in particular.

Broncos are my favourites to win after they signed Hunt and changed their coach to a strict disciplinarian will have a positive effect for 2-3 years before the players grow tired of it and get stale.

I've got Bulldogs as third favourites with Storm second I really think Penrith will miss Luai. Sharks, Panthers and Manly will be in the top 6.
