Did Wayne Bennett sell out the Dolphins from the start?

I'm a brand new supporter so apologies for what might be considered rudimentary questions, and lack of knowledge on the team.

Since I'm new I'm going through previous media to better acquaint myself with the club.

I came across these two Youtube shorts from a podcast that has a lot of negatives aimed at Wayne Bennett and I wanted to get your thoughts.

Did Wayne not put in a proper effort with the club from the start?

I thought Wayne did a phenomenal job with us. He was hired to set us up for long-term success. I thought he did that really well.

In my opinion he:

1. Got the mix between experience and youth right. though of course, Flegler through no fault of Wayne's hasn't paid off yet.
2. Recruited the right kind of players like Herbie and Flegler
3. Recruited some very good young players like Bostock and Donoghue both of whom I was skeptical about at first.
4. Created good depth though that may have some about as a result of the injury crisis we have had every year so far.
5. Left us in a good position with the salary cap.

he set the foundations which is what they wanted they didnt care in last year that woolf was doing the work and he was looking at sydney and sorting his cancer out as he was still putting in the right stuff

Dolph I reckon with Donga and yes 2285 he’s a Lake Macquarie lad he came via signing a deal with Capras that included a train & trial with Dolphins. He impressed Bennett that he was added to Top 30 and included in the 17 for round 1 ahead of Nikorima and Milford who both played for Capras that weekend. Bostock and Graham also had their Dev deals changed to Top 30.

Bennett done a lot of good things some of those videos without seeing them might be valid as Saints, Newcastle and Brisbane all had varying issues. The issue with Souths was that the new coach allowed one player to run the club once players run a club it’s all over. But generally people don’t dig deep or research the success or failures of clubs choosing the easy narrative instead.

I haven't seen those podcasts but I certainly will have a look at some point, but on the two points noted in each clips title:

Wayne really has hitched his cart to South's and im guessing he is not going anywhere else for the rest of his life, but like others have said the balance is pretty good for a new club. To think we got some really successful old storm players that chose to put their egos aside and not rest on their laurels and take up something that would purely only benefit those that came after them was almost incredible. Of course there are the youngsters that have been mentioned here too. I don't see any uncontrollable egos in the team, which is an underrated quality to me. Good players, but none are arrogant pigs.

The other thing that helped is the fact that woolfy was always going to be long term plan, and he too was ok to sit back as assistant and let wayne be the face, despite the fact that woolfy has as good a resume you can get without a past engagement as head coach in the NRL. Also seems to be a straight shooter and humble. And there is the balance once again.

Not saying it will work forever but the platform is as solid as you can ask for.

I'd add he also put together a well balanced squad. Fast backs, skillful backs, ball playing halves, big forwards, smaller forwards who do a lot of work, aggressive forwards (though Kaufusi sometimes takes it a bit far) .

Bennett is the goat. End of. He is one of the best coaches/managers on the planet. His speaking is used across many industries. My wife has heard him in the corporate space. She knows nothing of sport, however applauded his content and delivery.

He is a great man/people manager. At this level that means more than teaching players what they should already know.

Perth will be a great barometer for how good Bennett was and is.

Ill call it now. Watch Perth be the cannonfodder for the league under Mal. I bet they are pretty much insignificant. They will be no where near Dolphin like.

My grandmother could have coached Australia. Lets be honest.

They wont start like the Dolphins. There is a reason the NRL wanted Bennett at new starts ups. Souths got in the way of that.

Whilst i thought Wishart would complement the balance of our squad. However, as the spearhead, that might be a stretch. Meaney outside od the storm system will return to the player he was at the dogs. Curran is too small as the Dogs found out. Sexton was good at the dogs, but will he fire with a squad that isnt miles over the cap.

PNG is interesting. Last year their U19s team went within a whisker of beating Aus schoolboys. The superior fitness of the latter saw them score a couple of late tries to get away with a 2 or 4 point win. So you'd think PNG might be better than Perth.

The actual entrance of more PNG talent by way of the chiefs I suspect will take some years once their supposed pathways and programs are actually up and running like they are promising, not immediately sadly.

You would think it'll basically be the PNG national team, with a couple of not big name but hard working Australian forwards, vs NRL teams.

Yep. Because Im unsure which australians are going to want to be in PNG long term. Depending on what they are planning fot home games. Their Qld cup team played out of Australia from what I understand (didnt pay attention to them)
