Short Boys Podcast done an podcast with Max Plath. Very good well worth watching.

One of the hosts Brock is a Dolphins fan and the other host Matt is one of those where Dolphins are the second side. Even though they're not a Dolphins podcast more about the wider NRL they're probably the best Dolphins podcast out there. It's very biased towards the Dolphins.

Plath takes it to max in lock battle with Gilbert
By Joel Gould
December 4, 2024

Max Plath was Dolphins player of the year in 2024 but he is getting ready to fight for the lock forward position he made his own.

Plath, also the players' player last season, has Queensland forward Tom Gilbert returning from an ACL rupture and breathing down his neck to wear the No.13.

He also is on a mission to impress new coach Kristian Woolf and not to be a one-season wonder. After winning the club's pre-season time trials for consecutive years there is no sign the 23-year-old is basking in last winter's glory.

"I had a chat with Woolfy after the season finished and you hear a lot about players having that second year syndrome where they take it a bit easier and the foot off the pedal," Plath said.

"I am making a conscious effort not to do that. I am working on my fitness and all the hard stuff in the game and striving to get better.

"(Fitness) is the backbone of my game. I am not the fastest or the most skilful or strongest player so I need to have some sort of edge. I need to make sure I am the best possible in that area."

Plath is overly modest on that score. He has played in the halves and hooker and has plenty of skill. The reality is that Kodi Nikorima and Isaiya Katoa will be in the halves and Jeremy Marshall-King at hooker.

That leaves Gilbert and Plath in a virtual shootout.

Plath and Gilbert will be first 2 chosen but nothing like very healthy competition.

From all reports Plath, Gilbert and Herbie are generally the 3 best at training.

You basically said it. Spots will be found for Gilbert and Plath. Younger and fitter legs on the field is what the club needs. Last year forwards lacked a lot of punch bar JMK from dummy half and Plath in behind the ruck. The most powerful runners up the middle were Farnworth and Fuller.

There are several automatic selections. I think those 3 plus Katoa and JMK. Hammer is but his best position is centre. Who else? Hopefully Flegler in the second half of the season.

But we have one person on here who don't rate Plath and Katoa :)

I rate Herbie and Hammer as the 2nd and 3rd best centres in the game today take your pick who's 2 and 3. I don't count Turbo as a centre because he strictly plays one position in clubland but Turbo is a freak talent when free of injury he would be the best prop if he played there. I would have Best at no.4 centre and either Holmes, Staggs or Xerri at no.5.

As a fullback Hammer is the 2nd best fullback at Dolphins. The best unfortunately is injured. The best fullbacks in the NRL today in order are Turbo, Ponga, Edwards, Tedesco as a clear cut top 4 and that 5th spot between Walsh, Kini, Papenhausen and Drinkwater with Mitchell is after them. I do think the most positively influential signing next year will be Gutherson along with Luai.

Actually, I think Latrell Mitchell is the best centre in the comp when he's playing centre.

Mitchell is a very good centre much better there than fullback he just redusss to play there in club anymore.

Crichton is not only so easily the best centre in the game today he’s now in the same discussion as Gasnier, Rogers, Cronin and Meninga.

As in Reg Gasnier? Crighton is U10s in comparison. He wasn't even and I think has never been Dally M centre of the year. It's ok. All just opinion but if I was coach of the Dolphins, no way at all I'd swap Crighton for Herbie.

Of course Reg both he and Meninga are immortals both Cronin and Rogers were next level. Crichton has jumped to no.5 IMO.

Key player in Penrith 3 in a row, carried Samoa into a WC Final and he’s in the top 3 culture changing signings of Bulldogs have ever made with Kevin Ryan and Bob McCarthy and second to Terry Lamb as the best signing from another club.

Herbie is fantastic and I wouldn’t swap him or Hammer they’re perfect for what the Dolphins need. Hammer was straight out not wanted by Cowboys and Herbie was kind of the one Broncos thought was most disposable heck Dolphins tried to get Mariner first. Both are incredible for Dolphins off the field and both have developed into marquee players weren’t marquee signings.

I watched a podcast it was a horrible podcast BK Sport the night Dolphins gained NRL entry in late 2021 they went through the off contract players for 2023 and chose Momirovski as a better centre than Herbie this was after 2021. Look how far Herbie has come last year.

As for Dally M awards whilst they mean nothing with Badel and Rothfield as judges Crichton and Herbie been the centres of the year 2023 and 2024.

Herbie is way better than Crighton. Last year Crighton was close but lacks the natural talent of Herbie. Herbie will pull away from Crighton next year. If Tom Turbo, Mitchell and Edwards remain healthy, I doubt Crighton makes the NSW team.
