The Dolphins are ready to go to a new high in the NRL after becoming the first Australian sporting franchise to partner with a medicinal cannabis company.
The Dolphins have secured Alternaleaf – Australia’s largest plant medicine clinic – in a groundbreaking sponsorship deal for the next two years.
Medicinal cannabis is legal in Australia and a booming industry across the globe as alternative medicine grows in popularity.
Unlike the illicit narcotic drug, medicinal cannabis refers to quality assured, pharmaceutical products intended for therapeutic use to treat specific conditions.
Cannabis products are banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency without an exemption and the partnership is not related to medical treatment for Dolphins players.

Pretty cool sponsor. Hopefully this will help reduce the stigma for some people.

I don't smoke it myself. At least not on a regular basis and only if someone offers me a puff. I don't buy it myself. But seriously, is it any worse than tobacco or alcohol? I don't think so.

It's remoured the CEO and Wayne had a long negotiating session in private after which Wayne was really hungry.

Leave Wayne alone. He won't even drink a beer let alone smoke a joint:unsure:.

From a Mental Health perspective, it is much worse. That is according to my wife who has spent her whole career in that field.

Fair enough. I don't know about the mental health side of it. I was just thinking about physical health.

The Dolphins’ partnership with Alternaleaf, a company that prescribes medicinal cannabis, is reportedly being reviewed for potential breaches of the Therapeutic Goods Act.
That is according to the SMH, who are reporting the TGA are reviewing the sponsorship deal due regulations banning the advertisement of prescription medicine.
The NRL’s 17th franchise announced their partnership with Alternaleaf last month, signing a two year deal to be included on the club’s jersey across player’s sternums.

Alternaleaf, according to the website of its owner, describes the company as “Australia’s largest medical cannabis clinic, delivering high-quality care to more than 100,000 patients every year”.
Medicinal cannabis is legal within Australia, however the issues have reportedly arose from the companies advertisements.
Alternaleaf is being broadcasted across the nation and has also reportedly been prominently featured at Dolphins home games.
“The TGA is aware of the partnership between the Dolphins and Alternaleaf and is assessing if any material published in connection with this partnership raises concerns under the advertising requirements of the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 (the Act),” a statement provided to the SMH read.
“Partnerships between sport teams and entities involved in the supply of medicinal cannabis are not prohibited by the Act, however the advertising of medicinal cannabis, as prescription medicines, to the public is prohibited.”

Alternaleaf could be banned for adversiting at the stadium, on the Dolphins’ jerseys and across the club’s website and social media platforms.
The Dolphins sponsorship is also not related to medical treatment for players, with cannabis being a banned substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
“This is about a partnership with a health services clinic,” Dolphins CEO Terry Reader said.
“We deal with sponsorship partnerships across multiple industries and across multiple countries that all require an awareness and knowledge of regulations and obligations, and this partnership is no different.”
The TGA has reportedly contacted both Fox Sports and Channel 9 who are working with the governing body to comply to guidelines.

Looks like bureaucrats trying to justify their tax payer financed jobs.

Depends on the patient. High THC (see what did there?) strains if taken in large quantities have some damaging qualities. However humans have cannabinoid receptors a quirk of evolution which suggests we are meant to take (ingest?) the base product. There is some great work using mushrooms LSD and MDMA to treat things from anxiety to PTSD and even Parkinson's. Most of the negative press around the damage of drugs comes from propaganda pushed out in the second half of the 20th century by governments after the so called war on drugs.

I guess it's like all things, recreationally in moderation. But for medicinal like this is, give me a cannabis based product over some of that fentanyl stuff anyday. Usually medicine based is low THC removing the psychoactive issue.

Depends on what you call worse. Nutt, King and Phillips (2010) produced a harm model listing substances with a combined weighting of under harm and harm to others (crime, antisocial behaviour etc)

Alcohol is top on 72 points mainly harm to others(abuse, violence, vandalism etc) tobacco 26 cannabis 20 both with similar harm to others cannabis being ranked less harmful to the user. As an example heroin and crack are 55/54. Steroids 10 acid 7 and shrooms 6.

In fact the biggest risk factor in taking cannabis is rolling with tobacco

Interesting. Are you a specialist in the field? Surprised acid and mushrooms are so low. I was told consistent use of mushrooms over a relatively extended period, like a couple of times a week for a year, absolutely fries ones brain.

I used to smoke (tabacco and a bit of pot here and there) but as for alcohol being the worst, isn't it misleading? If you drink a beer 20 times a day, it's worse than 20 smokes a day but if you drink one beer a day, it's quite healthy. As far as I know anyway. Seems you know much better than me.

But it will be a giant shame is some bureaucrats with nothing better to do ruin this sponsorship agreement.

its a general view not an individual view. alcohol is very high for harm to others. breaking windows, fighting pissing in the streets etc.

I'm fairly sure if you drank 20 beers a day every day you'd die alot sooner than smoking 20 tabs

Of course. What I mean to say is when they say alcohol is worse than tobacco, 20 beers a day is obviously much worse than 20 smokes a day but very few even heavy drinkers, drink close to 20 beers a day but most smokers, smoke about 20 a day. Some more, some less but I guess the average is around 20.

Notice this sponsorship has tape over it?
It looked like they tore it off at halftime. It was fraying and peeling off already and I think would have been a distraction. Tearing it off was the right move but I wonder if it will create any problems for the front office.
