Dolphins set for NRLQ U20 Development Series

Author Dolphins Media
Timestamp Tue 27 May 2025, 04:49 PM

The emerging talent of the Dolphins' development and academy system will take centre stage in the newly announced NRLQ under-20 development series starting this weekend.

Announced today as a 6-week home-and-away round-robin competition contested between under-20s sides for all four Queensland-based NRL teams, taking place across three two-week blocks.

The competition aims to enhance elite development pathways by addressing the current void for Queensland-based NRL clubs following the conclusion of the QRL's 2025 junior representative competitions, including the Mal Meninga Cup Under 19s competition and related representative games.

The Dolphins' side will play their first match this weekend against the Gold Coast Titans at Cbus Super Stadium, kicking off at 12:35 pm.

Throughout the competition, a number of the games will form part of the game days for NRL fixtures, including the Dolphins' U20 side's final game at Suncorp Stadium on the 9th of August, taking place before the Dolphins and Roosters NRL fixture.

Kayo Stadium will host the Dolphins' two additional home games on the 5th and 27th of July.

Following the announcement of the new NRLQ Under 20 development series, the Dolphins have unveiled their first team list ahead of their Round 1 clash with the Titans this Saturday, 12:35 pm, at CBUS Super Stadium.

Head Coach Scott Murray has named Dolphins development player Lewis Symonds to captain the team. Symonds was last seen in a Dolphins jersey earlier this year, playing in the Dolphins' 50 to 8 victory over the Cowboys in the NRL Pre-Season Challenge.

A Queensland representative in the Under 19 State of Origin last year, Symonds has been playing for Dolphins affiliate club, the Capras, in the Queensland Cup, making his first start in nine appearances for the Central Queensland side last week.

I hope all these players go well and this series is important for the Dolphins as they build a pathways system.

I'm so happy to see LJ Nonu and Charlie Dickson there.

Interesting Tevita Naufahu, John Fineanganofo and Elijah Rasmussen playing for Capras instead this weekend.

A bit off topic but we are now ahead of Broncos on the competition table. It's a big deal. The best young players choosing us instead the Broncos.

Yeah they’re all under the age of 20 or same age as Nonu they all played Meninga last year.

Interesting the Capras trio eligible remained with Capras which judging by their results need more than 3 players.

In 2024 Tevita Naufahu played Mal Meninga Cup which is U19

There is another Elijah Rasmussen who was a winger and it seems that profile has been attached to the current Dolphins forward Elijah Rasmussen.

Dolphins in a press release confirm Rasmussen played U19 in 2024 - https://www.dolphinsnrl.com.au/news/2024/05/22/dolphins-pathways-players-earn-upgrade/

Naufahu and Rasmussen are from New Zealand.

Fineanganofo also played Meninga in 2024 and also from New Zealand

How can you be 26 and last year play under 19 which is the age group for Mal Meninga?

I told you they used another profile and I provided sources for that.

They were all eligible and played with Capras.

Dolphins NRLQ Under 20 Team List: Round 2 v Cowboys
Author Liam Edwards

The Dolphins will head to Townsville in Round 2 of the NRLQ Under 20s competition, taking on the Cowboys as both sides chase consecutive victories to start the series.

After an injury in the 10th minute of last week's match saw him miss the remainder of the game, winger LJ Nonu has been cleared to play and has retained his spot in the starting side.

Halfback Noah Fien will be rested this week, with Brooklyn Sabine coming into the starting side in the number seven jersey. Sabine impressed last week when he came off the bench, caught a wayward Titans kick near his own goal line, and beat defenders with a show of speed to run 90 metres and score.

Patrick Kailahi will start at prop again this week after a late switch with Carter Ford saw him shift from the bench to the starting side before kick-off in Round 1.

Kilarney Lavender will also be rested for the game, with Dolphins Academy and 2024 Australian Schoolboys representative Zac Garton named on the bench to make his NRLQ Debut.

Reeco Kirk will come onto the interchange as the bench utility after being named in last week's extended squad.

Elijah Rasmussen playing for Dolphins this weekend in the NRLQ U20 series
It would be a huge bonus if he were able to play NRL this year. The door is open for him if he's good enough though it's very hard for props his age. Very few props break into the NRL at his age. Most props don't make it until 22~24.
